Extremity Ultrasound
An vascular ultrasound of the upper or lower extremities is a safe, painless, and non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to the blood vessels. A venous ultrasound will evaluate the veins to assess for blood clots, venous insufficiency, and blood flow abnormalities. An arterial ultrasound will assess blood flow and detect any narrowing (stenosis) or blockages caused by plaque buildup (atherosclerosis).
What does it evaluate ?

-
Presence or absence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
-
Location and extent of blood clots
-
Venous reflux or chronic venous insufficiency (in cases of leg swelling, varicose veins, or skin changes)
-
Presence, location, and severity of atherosclerosis
-
Monitoring of known peripheral artery disease or post-procedure follow-up (e.g., after bypass surgery or stenting)

Benefits of the Extremity Ultrasound:

-
No radiation or contrast – completely safe and well-tolerated
-
Rapid and accurate diagnosis of DVT, reducing the risk of life-threatening complications like pulmonary embolism
-
Real-time imaging allows dynamic assessment of blood flow and vein/artery function
-
Guides treatment decisions, including anticoagulation, compression therapy, or determining if a referral for additional vascular interventions is recommended.
-
Rapid, accurate diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease
